These speakers have no internal surround sound decoding abilities. They won't work with Tivo or ReplayTV or AppleTV or Boxee or Roku or Popbox or any internet streaming media set top box. They only work with desktop computers that have the old analog 3 port mini jack connectors.
Unfortunately I had to explain to him that because the only audio output on his HDTV was digital fiber optic TOSLINK he couldn't connect them. They also won't work on laptops. They won't work on any Mac computer (desktop or laptop) as Macs support digital optical for surround.
A friend bought these to connect to his HDTV. They won't work with DVD players Blu-Ray or otherwise.
They won't work with a PS3. They won't work on an XBOX 360.
Yes they still sell some computer that have that type of old analog connection. Most computers these days support digital optical audio out and these won't work with those.1 star because not only is it misleading to sell surround speakers that only work with some computers but because it wouldn't have cost them too much to add digital surround decoding and because the description is not clear enough to non-tech people that these speakers are so limited in their application.
I also like having my PC tower as far away as possible, as everything is integrated into my computer and almost everything I use is wireless. Make sure you plug these into a surge protector. managed to find them online for less than what I paid for them originally including shipping. I found the wires to actually be a little too short, especially on the front end speakers. I use an old style Japanese table as my desk, and it's too low for the sub-woofer to sit under, so I have to have it off to the side, which can make things a little tight. lol. gets power, but no sound at all, the module in the front end of the woofer housing was toast.
However, I love these speakers. And I am buying a new set. Bought these about 2 years ago, from a different site at just under 70.00 not including shipping. It doesn't actually "clamp" I just set it up that way. ^__^ All the wires can be a bit of a pain, but something a few twist ties and careful planning can't fix. especially for how I like to set up my computing area. even with free shipping, they are 20 dollars more expensive than what I have paid for them to replace my previous Logitech 5.1 system. the prices here at Amazon are ridiculous.
I was re-arranging things, and mistook the plug in the sub-woofer as the plug to my lamp, and boom, no more sound. if they had this system available in wireless. These speakers do have a nice sound, but be careful on blasting volume to full potential because you WILL get either crackling, buzzing or both. I really like the center speaker, because if you open up the base fully, you can safely clamp it onto a flat screen monitor at the top. I would be one happy little computing fool.lol.But most importantly, shop around for this system if you are interested in buying it. Never fear buying refurbished either, everything I have purchased refurbished has outlasted things I have purchased brand new.
I never write a review on a product, but since everyone else does and it is very helpful I decided that I will start on products that I purchase, this speakers system is really great, the sound is wonderful for such a cheap price, I am really enjoying this, I put it on my 42in flat screen and it makes it a lot better, I also play my xbox 360 with this and the sound is just unbelieveable, only problem I have is the cards to the speakers are not that long, but I still rate this product 5 stars
I bought these for a basement audio surround system knowing that they worked better on a computer system. I found it for $3.99 plus shipping but you cannot find it in stores or at least around where I live. They do get very loud and have a good sound that doesn't sound tinny or raspy if set to high. Kind of disappointed but I purchased an adaptor from Logitech for them and it is much better now. I did not want that and I can connect these speakers to any audio out source that I use (cd player, vcr, tv). Logitech 970150-0403 5.1 Game Console Audio Adapter. Used it once and even with matrix mode used on a non stereo source the back speakers didn't work. Would I purchase this speaker system again, oh yeah.
It gives it a stereo sound but in no way does it work as a true surround sound but it does what I want it to do and sounds good to me. The adapter is very cheap if you shop around. The low cost other systems out there almost always include a cd player and power the speakers. I just adjust the volume on the controller and it works great.
I hooked this up and it was replacing my 2.1 system. They have great low end and good mid, but the weird thing is when you really crank it the sound quality gets better. Man does this thing rock. For the price you simply can't beat the quality that these speakers have. I would definitely recommend buying this if you can't afford the high end stuff. Great product, I am glad i bought it.
